Your files stay put
Depot reads the file straight off your disk and writes your edit back to the same place. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing of yours sits on anyone's server — and saving means alt-tabbing back into the game, not hunting through Downloads.
Nothing to install
Open a tab and you are on the current version. No setup, no updater nagging you, and no "works on my machine" because everyone is running the same build.
Chrome or Edge
Reading your folders without uploading them needs the File System Access API, which only Chromium browsers have. Firefox and Safari cannot do it, so Depot does not pretend to.
